ROOTAS Dominican Republic is an immersive travel experience for Latin-Jewish young adults living in Los Angeles. Brought to you by Jewtina y Co. and NuRoots, this cohort experience will bring together a diverse group of people to learn, explore, and connect with Dominican culture, history and peoplehood.

Eligibility AND COST

This trip is intended for:

  • Angelenos that identify as Jewish and who are between 21-45 years of age.
  • Individuals that are eager to immerse themselves in Dominican and Caribbean culture.
  • Lovers of group learning and group travel.
  • Curious souls ready to connect with the global Jewish community and deepen their understanding of our collective heritage.


We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to the generous support of our funders and our partnership with NuRoots, the ROOTAS Dominican Republic trip is offered at a highly subsidized sliding scale cost of $750-$1250. This fee covers accommodations, meals, and in-country transportation, offering an affordable and inclusive experience. Please note that the cost does not cover airfare to and from the Dominican Republic or personal spending money.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Santo Domingo

  • Arrival and check-in at your accommodation in Santo Domingo.
  • Welcome and community grounding programming.
  • Welcome dinner with an introduction to Dominican Republic's history as a haven for Jewish refugees during World War II.

Day 2: Discovering Santo Domingo

  • Visit the Museum of the History of the Dominican People, highlighting Jewish migration stories.
  • Visit Jewish sights of Santo Domingo.

Day 3:  Discovering Santo Domingo

  • Connecting to social issues of the Dominican Republic.
  • Guided tour of the Colonial Zone.
  • Explore Dominican dance culture.

Day 4: Depart for Sosua

  • Departure for Sosua and check-in at accommodation.
  • Introduction to Sosua's Jewish heritage.
  • Visit the Jewish Museum of Sosua and the local synagogue, learning about the Jewish settlers' impact.
  • Shabbat in Sosua

Day 5: Exploring Sosua's Jewish Heritage

  • Discovering the beaches of Sosúa.
  • Group processing sessions.
  • Havdalah

Day 6: Departure

  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel.
  • Individual departure.

  • Angelenos that identify as Jewish and who are between 21-45 years of age. Priority will be given to individuals who identify as Latin and Jewish. 
  • Individuals that are eager to immerse themselves in Peruvian and Latin American culture.
  • Lovers of group learning and group travel.
  • Curious souls ready to connect with the global Jewish community and deepen their understanding of our collective heritage.


We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to the generous support of our funders and our partnership with NuRoots, the ROOTAS Peru trip is offered at a highly subsidized sliding scale of $1000-$1250. This fee covers double-occupancy hotel accommodations, meals, and in-country transportation (including domestic airfare), offering an affordable and inclusive experience. Single occupancy hotel accommodations are available at a $500 supplement.


Please note that your participation fee does not include international airfare to and from Peru or personal spending money. All participants are required to secure cancellation and/or travel insurance for their international flights.

Sample Itinerary - January 19-26, 2025

Day 1:  Sunday - Arrive in Lima

  • Settle into your accommodation in Lima, followed by a welcome program with the ROOTAS delegation.

Day 2: Monday - Cultural Exploration in Lima

  • Delve into the complexities of migration and the formation of Peruvian identity as you explore Lima's cultural landscape. Visit museums and cultural centers that highlight the diverse communities and influences that have shaped Peru, offering a deeper understanding of how these waves of migration have contributed to the nation's unique sense of peoplehood.

Day 3: Tuesday - Jewish Heritage Tour in Lima - Pt. 1

  • Dive deep into the history of Lima’s Jewish community by exploring its foundational institutions. Visit key historical sites that trace the community’s roots, learn about the early Jewish settlers, and understand their impact on the cultural and economic development of the city.

Day 4: Wednesday - Jewish Heritage Tour in Lima - Pt. 2

  • Shift focus to the modern-day Jewish community in Lima, exploring how it has grown and adapted in contemporary times. Visit current Jewish institutions that are central to the community today, engage with local leaders, and discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by the Jewish community in a modern, multicultural Lima.

Day 5: Thursday - Trip to Iquitos

  • Fly to Iquitos, get settled into our hotel, and begin with an introduction to the city's distinctive Jewish history.

Day 6: Friday - Shabbat in Iquitos

  • Explore Iquitos and experience the tranquility of the Amazon rainforest as you celebrate Shabbat with the  local Jewish community amidst the natural beauty of the jungle.

Day 7: Saturday - Amazon Exploration

  • Experience a guided tour of the Amazon, immersing yourself in the region's natural beauty and rich local culture. Reflect on the diverse experiences of Jewish communities in Peru, culminating in a Havdalah ceremony and a memorable closing dinner.

Day 8: Sunday - Depart to Lima and Home

  • Fly back to Lima and depart for home.
