Shades of Belonging is a research project that explores the experiences of adult Jewish adoptees of color. Designed and implemented by Dr. David McCarty-Caplan (PhD), who is himself a Colombian adopted Jew, this study intends to center the voices of adoptees raised in Jewish families to reveal new insight into the intersections of race, identity, and religion among an understudied, but significant part of Jewish communities of color. It is hoped this work will provide a valuable contribution to ongoing inclusivity and equity efforts within Judaism. Learn more about this incredible research and initiative here.
Dr. David McCarty-Caplan was born in Bogota, Colombia but adopted and raised in a Jewish family in the United States. This lived experience has profoundly shaped his personal and professional interest in the complexities of identity development, and pursuit of social equity and justice.
David holds a PhD in Social Work and served as Associate Professor of Social Work at California State University, Northridge from 2015-2022, where he focused on anti-oppressive and equity-informed pedagogy, policy analysis and research. He has been Jewtina y Co.'s Director of Research and Evaluation since 2023.
